From the Gallatin to the Madison: Helping You Find Your Way. I didn’t grow up with a fly rod in my hand. In fact, I didn’t pick one up until 2011. Living in Montana, you’re surrounded by some of the most legendary trout water in the world. But back then, I found that walking into a fly shop felt intimidating and people speaking a foreign language. It was intimidating, expensive, and—to be honest—a little snobby. I spent the first few years making every mistake in the book. I bought the wrong flies, struggled with my casting, and wasted money on gear I didn’t actually need. Why I Started this site I created Fly Fishing for Beginners to be the resource I wish I had when I started. I believe that you shouldn’t need a PhD in entomology or a massive bank account to enjoy a day on the river. My goal is to strip away the jargon and the “gear-shaming.” On this site, I focus on: The Essentials: Only the gear you actually need to catch fish. The Basics: Clear, simple techniques that work on the water. The Truth: Honest advice from a guy who has been exactly where you are. Whether you’re planning your first trip to Montana or just trying to catch bluegill in your local pond, I’m here to help you skip the frustration and get straight to the “tight lines.” Thanks for being here, Steve MooreFounder, Fly Fishing for Beginners
